House Speaker Thom Tillis has defeated incumbent Senator Kay Hagan for the 2014 U.S. Senate election in North Carolina.
AP and NPR are calling the race for Tills, according to the Charlotte Observer.
Hagan and Tillis faced off in one of the most hotly contested Senate races in the country. More than $100 million has been spent on mostly negative TV ads.
It was one of the nation’s closest battles and was the 2014 cycle’s most expensive Senate race with $72 million of that coming from outside groups.
The Republicans seized control of the Senate.
